Regattas are a fabulous way to test your racing skills as well as the ability of your boat and crew. They give you more options in terms of your competitors, courses and depending on the type of boat you own you might enjoy class level racing, or PHRF racing. Either way, they’re sure to be filled with fun and excitement.

Not only are regattas great fun on the water, they also include many shore-side activities after racing. With the anticipation building towards the final announcements of results, you won’t want to miss a thing! National Yacht Club members participate in many regattas throughout the year and host many others. National is a member Club of the Lake Ontario Racing Circuit (LORC) and AHMEN Racing

Even if you don’t race on a boat, volunteering at a regatta is a great way to experience the excitement this great sport has to offer. If you are interested in volunteering at a regatta this season, reach out to regatta organizers for more information on how to help out - click on events below for contact details for the volunteer regatta chair (if available).

GLAA History
The official history of the Great Lakes Alberg Association cites Jerry Kedey's Opus 1, launched on July 7th '63(2) as the first Alberg 30 produced. While this is true, it's not the whole story. (Get the whole story at www.alberg.ca) KC 1, a second Opus 1 was delivered to Jerry at the National Yacht Club, at Toronto's Western Gap, starting a long and successful production of more than 700 Alberg 30’s.

The Great Lakes Alberg Association was formed at the National Yacht Club in the summer of 1964 using, with permission, the bylaws of the Lightning Association. And the rest is history.

Mobility Cup - August 28-September 3

Dear friends and supporters:

We are disappointed to announce that Mobility Cup 2020 hosted by Able Sail Toronto and National Yacht Club that was scheduled for August 30 to September 3, 2020 will now be moved forward to 2021. Due to the current circumstances related to COVID-19, the health and well-being of our sailors is paramount.

The Mobility Cup chairs and the AbleSail Network of Canada board have been monitoring and discussing for the last few weeks various scenarios and the decision was finally made.

We have already begun to plan the festivities for next year, and we will keep you updated over the coming months. We promise you that it will be an awesome Mobility Cup!

Volunteers and Committees: Any work and time that has been put in so far is not lost, and we will continue the online sessions and instructional documentation.

Sailors: Those that have already registered, your registration fees will be refunded to you; give us a few days to get that organized.

Hotel Reservations: Some volunteers and some sailors have already made their hotel bookings. Both host hotels have been notified; they have been very understanding and will work with you for the cancellation of your bookings. There is no penalty and no charges. The host hotels understand that the event will continue and so we will be changing the contracts and date on the booking system once that has been confirmed with National Yacht Club.

Thanks again, be safe, and keep practicing the social distancing, it is working!

The CanAm North Regatta Series is a result of a growing 2.4mR fleet in Canada and the USA.

For the past several years, 2.4mR sailors from the USA, Canada, Guatemala, Norway and the UK have enjoyed a fantastic CanAm Winter Regatta Series in Port Charlotte, FL and hosted by the Charlotte Harbour Yacht Club.

The Series starts with the 2.4mR North American Championships in Kingston with the final regatta of the Series being the 2.4mR Canadian Championships at the National Yacht Club.

Races of the 2.4mR CanAm North Series include:

Focus: Youth Who Need Your Support
The Broad Reach Foundation is the only charity in Ontario that engages disadvantaged youth in the sport, science and experience of sailing. We partner with 40 community agencies in the GTA, who choose the youth who participate in our on-shore and off-shore programs. Some of these agencies are C.A.M.H., Epilepsy Toronto, The 519, the Native Canadian Centre, LOFT, Jewish Immigrant Aid Services and Covenant House.

Many of the youth are from disadvantaged circumstances: homeless shelters, vulnerable neighbourhoods and drop-in centres, and may suffer from physical or mental challenges. Stepping aboard one of our boats presents a whole new world of opportunities and creates results that last far beyond the experience of sailing: more self-confidence, esteem, a discovery of new capabilities, and a sense that the horizon of possibilities extends far beyond the street.

If you wish to help youth who deserve your help, Broad Reach has a place for you! Anyone with skills, experience and knowledge can help to strengthen our charity that has benefitted from the generosity of sailors for twenty-one years.

We need volunteers who can help us fundraise, participate in community outreach, help with web design and maintenance, and provide bookkeeping and other essential administrative services.

To hear more about the Broad Reach story, please contact [email protected]. Some inspiring visuals can be found on The Broad Reach Foundation for Youth Leaders Facebook Page or on the Broad Reach Website.

The generosity of Nieuport Aviation and softchoice
The Broad Reach Foundation for Youth Leaders would like to offer our sincere thanks to the many knowledgeable and kind people at Nieuport Aviation and Softchoice. They have made a decision to provide corporate support through funding and by providing the youth with opportunities to learn about work in the aviation sector and we are deeply grateful to them for that support.

Hence an invitation to all sailors who are reading this article: come and join us at the National Yacht Club on 14 September and support the impact that sailing has on the many kids we work with. They would never have the opportunity of sailing otherwise and your support makes a world of difference.

The National Event - July 14-15

Dinghy & Skiff Regatta
Saturday & Sunday, July 14 & 15, 2018
National’s annual dinghy and skiff regatta will return in 2018! NYC invites dinghy and skiff sailors of all ages to participate in some friendly competition. NYC invites C420, I-14, 2.4 mR and any other single and double-handed classes with 5 boats or more, to register for this year’s event.

If you would like more information about our regatta or would like to volunteers to help with a range of jobs, please contact Regatta Chair David Foscarini at [email protected].

History of The National Event
The National Event was first held in the summer of 2010 with a mandate to provide quality racing for skiff competitors. Since it’s inception, the event has continue to grow, with 50 boats attending last year’s regatta from clubs within the GTA as well as a number of sailing schools outside of the Toronto area. It is a good midsummer event for skiff competitors, who in the past have used this event as a benchmark in fine-tuning their racing skills for events held later in the summer. In the past, The National Event has welcomed youth and adult sailors from 29er, 49er, Club 420, 1-14, Contender and the 2.4mR classes.

This is a multi-generational event, one of the few to be held on Lake Ontario. It offers the opportunity for youth sailors to interact with competitive athletes a generation or two older than themselves, reconfirming that quality competitive dinghy and skiff sailing is available for all ages.
